Green Awareness Workshop
IBEW Local Union 639 will offer a 90-minute workshop on the Green Economy/Green Jobs to members and other interested parties in the Fall. State Building Trades Council and CA Labor Federation representatives along with SLO LMCC Green Business Development Director Ken Smokoska will present the program.
Our goal is to provide a bird’s-eye view of the major changes we face in construction as the U.S. moves toward a “green” economy and to discuss the effect this has on workers.
Key Points Covered in the Workshop:
? Defining and shifting to a green economy
? How going green affects construction
? Why it’s important for contractors and the union workforce to take the lead on green jobs
? Policy changes enacted to address global warming and organized labor’s response
? What it means to have LEED certification for a building
? The role of the construction industry in reaching energy efficiency, sustainability, and renewable energy goals.
? Good and bad aspects of green jobs from a worker’s perspective
We mix interactive discussion with video clips, and a power-point presentation to keep the workshop engaging for journeymen and union staff.
This workshop will be offered at the beginning of the Green Jobs series of training classes. Classes will include Solar PV Installation, CALCTP Advanced Lighting and Control and Intro to Building Energy Audits.Dates will be announced soon.
